Check out this slide from Martin Dougiamas. He did a presentation at the Educause conference and this is what he had to say: Checkout this slideshow for more details.
I did not make it clear in that Blog post that Moodle 2.0 is still under development and it will be availble for beta testing in the next couple of months (I think) and realistically we won't be able to upgrade to Moodle 2.0 until the end of the year.
The school that I am at have decided to do the Moodle 2.0 upgrade in January so that we can use it for the 2010 academic year (Southernhemisphere school years go from January - December).
So don't feel to frustrated as 1.8 is fairly good. Just that when Moodle 2.0 comes, it is going to be AWESOME!
They say there are 54000 Moodle sites. Do people publish any research results? Can anybody help me? I need a good-conference or journal paper (or a series of papers) that describes any specific project that uses Moodle, not only how great Moodle is itself. Thank you!

We are still using Moodle 1.8 in our college which is a little frustrating. Thanks for sharing what could be done when the upgrade does happen.
